The reality is that more often than not you end having a product that after all the money expended in the licenses and customization does not do all what you want while providing useless bells and whistlers. We built software in two platforms Linux and Microsoft©. In each of them we use the most appropriate technology. On Linux we use Perl as main programming language, and PHP as main scripting language for web development. Database development is done in MySql. When using the Microsoft© platform, we use Visual Basic, Visual Basic.NET as main programming language and ASP/ASP.NET as web development language (Visual Basic.NET and ASP.NET are part of Visual Studio.NET and a part of the .NET framework). Database development is done in Access or MS SQL.
